What is GATE Exam?

  • GATE (Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is conducted for admission to M.Tech/ Ph.D. and other Government Scholarships/Assistantships in the field of engineering and technology.
  • The exam is conducted annually by IISc Bangalore and 7 IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Guwahati and Roorkee) on a rotational basis.
  • GATE is an online test, conducted for 24 disciplines (papers) of engineering. Mostly questions are fundamental, concept based and thought-provoking.
  • Please don’t have a misconception that GATE is only meant for ME/MTech which leads to the teaching career only. 
  • There are many other advantages of taking GATE such as employment in PSUs (Public Sector Undertakings), direct recruitment to Group A level posts in Central Government and some other Government of India Organizations. Read about  PSU Recruitment through GATE
  • GATE qualifiers can use their GATE Scorecard for admission to Master’s Program and direct Doctoral Programs in Engg./Tech./Architecture. 
  • The GATE Scorecard is also used to avail financial assistance (scholarship) for the post-graduate program.  Read more
  • The exam will also be held for international candidates in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates (U.A.E).

GATE 2023 Exam Dates

GATE 2023 Answer Key

After the GATE 2023 examinations, candidates’ responses has been available at GOAPS. Candidates can get it by entering their login details.

GATE answer keys for various papers has been displayed in GATE website. Memory Based answer key has been released on 6th February 2023. Candidates may submit their queries on the answer keys in a given time period after the payment. Evaluation of examination papers is finalized and score has been released.

GATE 2023 Result

GATE results will be released by the official authority in the 22nd March 2023. It will be available on the GATE 2023 website.

Candidates can get the result by entering their login details. It will show the qualifying status of the candidate. It is necessary to keep the result till the admission process gets over.

GATE 2023 Score Card

The GATE score card will show the relative performance of the candidate in a particular subject. GATE 2023 score will be valid for 3years from the date of announcement of the results.

The GATE 2023 scorecards can be downloaded between from 26th March to 31st May 2023.

The GATE scorecard will be printed with the photograph that candidate has submitted at the time of filing application form. GATE qualified candidates have to pay a fee of Rs. 500 those want to get a soft copy of his/her GATE Scorecard after last week of May 2023.

GATE 2023 Exam Pattern

Here, candidates can check the complete GATE Exam pattern in the below given section:

  • Mode: The exam will be conducted in online (CBT) mode.
  • No of Subject Papers: The exam will be conducted for 27 subject papers. Two new subject papers – Environmental Science & Engineering (ES) and Humanities & Social Sciences (XS) have been added this year.
  • Type of Questions: The questions will of Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ), Multiple Select Questions (MSQ) & Numerical Answer type (NAT).
  • Type of Sections: There will be two of types of sections in each paper – Compulsory & Optional.
  • Duration of Exam: The exam will be of total 3 hours.
  • Maximum marks: The question paper will be of 100 marks.
  • No. of Questions: The question paper will consist of 65 questions.
  • Marking Scheme: For MCQs and NATs, various questions will be of 1 or 2 marks. In MCQs of 1 mark, 1/3 marks will be deducted for wrong responses. For MCQs of 2 mark, 2/3 marks will be deducted for incorrect answers. There will be no negative marking for numerical type questions.

 Note: There will be NO negative marking for a wrong answer in NAT questions.

GATE 2023 Syllabus

The GATE Syllabus will be provided by the official authority. Two new subjects (Environmental Science & Engineering and Humanities & Social Sciences) have been added in the syllabus of GATE 2023.

Bio-medical Engineering (BM): Engineering Mathematics, Signals and Systems, Electrical Circuits, Measurements and Control Systems, Analog and Digital Electronics, Sensors and Bioinstrumentation, Measurements and Control Systems, Biomechanics, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biomaterials, Medical Imaging Systems.

Architecture and Planning (AR): Architecture and Design, Construction and Management, Building Materials, Environmental Planning and Design, Building and Structure, etc.

Mathematics (MA): Linear Algebra, Algebra, Complex Analysis, Functional Analysis, Real Analysis, Numerical Analysis, etc.

Electronics and Communication Engineering (EC): Engineering Mathematics, Networks, Electronic Devices, Signals and Systems, Digital Circuits, Analog Circuits, etc.

Chemical Engineering (CH): Process Calculations and Thermodynamics, Engineering Mathematics, Fluid Mechanics and Mechanical Operations, etc.

Instrumentation Engineering (IN): Engineering Mathematics, Signals and Systems, Electrical Circuits, Control Systems, etc.

Petroleum Engineering (PE): Linear Algebra, Petroleum Formation Evaluation, Oil and Gas Well Testing, etc.

Civil Engineering (CE): Engineering Mathematics, Structural Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, etc.

Statistics (ST): Calculus, Probability, Linear Algebra, Inference, Stochastic Processes, Multivariate Analysis, Design of Experiments & Regression Analysis.
